A friend asked me to describe 'City of Thieves' by David Benoiff while I was reading it. My short answer: the story of two men in their search to find a dozen eggs.
Truthfully, it was a lot more interesting than that makes it sound. Two Russians are slated for execution during WWII, but are given a chance at freedom if they can find and return with one dozen eggs so that the colonel's daughter can have a proper wedding cake.
This seems like an easy task, but during the Siege of Leningrad and the resulting famine, chickens were difficult to come by, even on the black market.
A good book, overall. I'm looking forward to reading more by the author.
